RE: GRATA Follow-up

============================================================================

Lieutenant Kim’Vel:

I’m sure you’re already well aware of the excitement surrounding the detection by the GRATA team of a signal originating in the Andromeda collision fields this weekend. Already I’m up to my ears in curious bureaucrats, and you know how much I hate bureaucrats. Everybody wants in on this. I have a meeting with the Security Council in two weeks, and I don’t want to go in there naked. Get your people out there and figure out what the hell is going on before we lose control of this situation.

Yours,

Zorran

RE: GRATA Follow-up

============================================================================

Magistrate:

The source of the ultra-low frequency signal picked up by GRATA this weekend has been traced to a vast, likely synthetic structure in a large doldrum area near the Andromeda Breach. For ease of reference, we have codenamed the structure “ISHTAR.” Access to the site is severely limited by the violent celestial activity immediately outside the vicinity of the ISHTAR, but we have managed to approach with a small team of research vessels.

Seeing as the structure is evidently artificial in nature, at this time, we would like to request that any classified intelligence regarding construction, military, or scientific installation in this location be released to us.

Is this something of yours? It’s very impressive.

Respectfully,

Lt. Diora Kim’Vel

Information  Concerning

 ============================================================================

Lieutenant  Kim’Vel:

I  have  nothing  for  you.  No  department  will  own  up  to  this,  and  the  other  systems  are  showing  too  much  interest  to  be  responsible.  There’s  no  motion  to  cover  or  deny,  only  discussion  of  rights  to  the  property.  Just  in  case,  I  had  my  connections  in  the  Network  run  it  through  the  pipes,  but  it  turned  up  nothing.  That  means  this  is  either  the  biggest  cover-‐up  in  recorded  history,  or  nobody  actually  knows  what  this  thing  is.

Run  all  the  diagnostics  on  it,  I  want  to  know  all  observable  characteristics.  Give  special  attention  to  any  potential  for  weaponization.  Until  someone  says  otherwise,  this  is  the  Republic’s  baby.  Send  me  your  findings,  but  don’t  board  the  structure.  Repeat:  DO  NOT  board.  Send  me  your  preliminaries,  and  I’ll  tell  you  what  to  do  next.

Yours,

Zorran

Information  Concerning

============================================================================

Magistrate:

We  have  completed  initial  diagnostics  on  the  unidentified  vessel  codenamed  ISHTAR.  As  per  your  request,  we  have  given  specific  attention  to  any  destructive  capabilities  of  the  structure,  i.e.  viability  as  a  weapon,  though  only  limited  information  could  be  gained  without  boarding.  The  tests  yielded  the  following  notable  characteristics:

  • ISHTAR  is  composed  of  33.76%  Scandium,  15.32%  Promethium,  15.67%  Dysprosium,  12.14  Platinum,  7.56%  Gold,  and  17.96%  Unidentified  Elements,  coming  to  a  total  of  102.41%,  an  anomaly  we  have  yet  to  account  for;  most  likely  due  to  spatial  abnormalities  described  below.
  • All  attempts  to  determine  the  surface  area  and  volume  of  ISHTAR  have  resulted  in  software  errors.  We’ve  run  all  available  scans,  including  RPT,  GD,  and  even  simple  RADAR,  but  the  computer  consistently  returns  an  infinite  value.  This  could  be  due  to  a  number  of  variables,  including  radiation  or  magnetic  interference,  or  spatial  abnormalities  described  below.
  • As  described  in  previous  reports,  the  contours  of  the  structure  lend  it  an  odd  shape;  possibly  it  was  designed  this  way  to  resist  measurement,  similar  to  a  stealth  craft.  Direct  observation  has  determined  the  structure  to  be  a  minimum  of  500,000km,  likely  far  more,  possibly  even  twice  that  measurement  and  more  again.
  • ISHTAR  behaves  unlike  other  celestial  bodies,  man-made  or  otherwise:  it  has  no  measurable  gravitational  pull,  no  consistent  EMS  or  RAS,  and  does  not  seem  to  be  mobile  at  all,  although  without  an  accurate  GD  reading,  this  is  speculation  at  best.
  • We  have  as  yet  been  unable  to  trace  the  source  of  or  decrypt  the  ultra-low  frequency  noise  originally  detected  by  GRATA.  This  is  probably  due  to  our  inability  to  maintain  constant  reception  of  ISHTAR’s  EMS  and  RAS,  one  or  both  of  which  likely  contribute  to  the  genesis  of  the  noise.

Until  we  can  determine  the  nature  of  the  sound  and  the  levels  of  radiation,  among  many  other  unknown  factors,  it  will  be  impossible  to  determine  ISHTAR’s  destructive  potential,  though  its  composition  indicates  beyond  doubt  that  detonation  of  the  structure  would  assuredly  result  in  a  nuclear  event  of  devastating  proportions.

My  team  will  enter  orbit  and  standby  for  further  instruction.

Respectfully,

Lt.  Diora  Kim’Vel

Further  Orders

============================================================================

Lieutenant:

Your  orders  are  as  follows:

  1. Maintain  orbital  base  camp  with  live  information  feed  direct  to  RIA  HQ.
  2. Organize  and  deploy  teams  for  cartographic  research,  deep  composition  analysis,  tech  recon,  anthropological  significance,  and  hydrocarbon  dating.
  3. Minimize  civilian  casualties.

All  personnel  to  remained  stationed  at  ISHTAR  until  further  notice.  I’ll  be  in  touch  after  my  audience  with  the  security  council.  That’s  eight  days.  Keep  a  lid  on  things.

Yours,

Zorran

Velu  32

We  deployed  this  afternoon,  touched  down  on  ISHTAR.  It’s  such  a  bizarre  object,  such  a  strange  shape.  A  space  station?  A  ship?  I  don’t  know  what  it  is,  but  it’s  big,  and  I’ll  put  a  month’s  pay  on  it  being  manmade.  Zorran’s  trusted  me  with  this.  He’s  got  to  present  to  the  council  in  just  under  a  week.  If  I  can  crack  it,  give  him  something—anything—I  could  be  looking  at  a  promotion.

Velu  34

We’ve  established  12  separate  geophysical  stations  spread  out  over  the  first  square  kilometer.  The  place  is  even  bigger  than  it  looked  from  a  distance,  who  knows  how  long  it  will  take  to  map  it  all.  The  Echo  Markers  are  having  difficulty  mapping  even  this  area,  so  we’ll  have  to  wait  a  bit  before  setting  up  the  next  kilometer’s  worth.  Hopefully  the  geophys  techs  can  come  up  with  something.

Velu  36

Four  days  until  my  report  is  due,  and  my  fortune  has  turned.  I  found  something.  It’s  shiny  and  old.  Looks  like  stone,  small  and  round.  I’m  not  sure  why,  but  it  feels  like  a  good  luck  charm.

I  know  we’ve  run  the  organic  scan  twice  now  and  yielded  nothing,  but  when  I  was  working  late  at  geophys  12  just  shy  of  the  .75  marker,  I  could’ve  sworn  I  heard  something  skittering  around  in  the  walls.  It’s  probably  nothing,  but  I  figured  you  might  be  able  to  run  the  scan  again,  just  in  case  we  missed  something  small.

Orda:         (Eng.  Visher  Orda,  OHR  Research)

   Run  it  again,  from  the  top.  We’re  missing  something.  What  was  that?

McGuire:  What?

Orda:          I  thought  I  heard  something.  Like  rats  or  something.

McGuire:  Rats?

Orda:          Or  something.  It  doesn’t  matter.

McGuire:  Con  ran  a  precision  organic  scan  on  this  area  yesterday.  Nada.

Orda:           I  know,  I  know.  It’s  just…  this  place.  It  gets  to  me,  I  don’t  know.  I  miss  my  daughter.

McGuire:  I  didn’t  know  you  had  a  daughter.

Orda:          Isis.  She’ll  be  five  next  week.

McGuire:  Isis?  Visher,  you  all  right?

Orda:           Yeah,  fine.  Why?

McGuire:  Isis  is  my daughter.  Her  birthday.  I  told  you  about  it  at  mess  the  other  day.

Orda:          I  don’t  know  what  you’re  talking  about.  I  told  you.  Look,  I  know  my  own  kin.

McGuire: Isis,  her  middle  name  is–

Orda:         Rozaly.  She  was  born  on…

McGuire: Opharia.  In  Tyveria  City.

Orda:         Tyver  Memorial.

McGuire: Conceived  her  in–

Orda:         A  taxi  cab  downtown.  Just  like  in  the  movies.

McGuire: This  is  too  weird.

Orda:         Nevermind.  It’s  done.

McGuire: What?

RE:  Scan  results

============================================================================

Diora,

I  didn’t  want  to  send  this  to  Orda  (or  anyone,  for  that  matter)  without  consulting  you  first.  The  organic  scan  was  a  clean  sweep  again,  but  there  is  an  interesting  value  that  could  affect  the  margin  of  error  depending  on  how  you  look  at  it.  Basically,  if  you  scan  the  ship  for  organic  material,  it  yields  nothing.  Not  surprising,  considering  that  the  one  element  that  has  definitely  not  shown  up  on  the  comp  scans  is  carbon.  However,  out  of  curiosity,  I  ran  the  scan  in  inverse  mode,  i.e.  with  the  empty  space  as  the  anchor  as  opposed  to  the  ship  material.  Organic  ratings  jumped  through  the  roof.  It  could  just  be  interference  from  radiation  or  something,  but  I  enclosed  the  scan  docs,  figured  you  could  take  a  look  at  it.

Best,

Con

RE:  ULF  Analysis

============================================================================

Diora,

I’ve  been  running  the  analyses  on  the  noise  from  the  GRATA  array,  and  I  found  something  pretty  strange.  The  sound,  obviously,  is  a  bunch  of  layers  of  electromagnetic  and  radio  signals,  mostly  indecipherable  at  the  moment,  but  I  was  able  to  isolate  one  of  the  noises  kind  of  by  accident.  Turns  out  it’s  our  pathfinding  signal,  highly  distorted  and  possibly  reversed.  Thing  is,  I’m  working  with  the  original  file,  meaning  the  signal  that  was  received  before  we  were  even  assigned  to  this  thing.  That  means  that  GRATA  received  our  signal  bounced  back  from  ISHTAR  before  we  even  sent  it.  Weird,  right?

I’ll  send  it  through  Relativity,  just  for  laughs.

Con  is  coming  down  from  the  Xatrix  soon,  coming  for  a  special  visit.  Con’s  a  good  man,  charming  and  attractive.  And  discreet,  a  good  quality  when  you’re  servicing  your  commanding  officer.  I’ll  show  him  my  stone.  I  wonder  if  he’ll  like  it.

Velu  40

I  put  my  stone  on  a  shelf  in  my  suite,  but  I  couldn’t  see  it  from  the  desk.  So  I  made  a  little  platform  for  it.  It  looks  nice  in  this  light.

We’ve  been  trying  to  contact  you  for  three  days  now  but  couldn’t  get  a  single  message  through.  What  the  hell  is  going  on  out  there?  Respond  as  soon  as  possible.  Should  you  fail  to  respond  within  60  hours,  we  will  dispatch  a  search  and  rescue  team.

I  dream  about  it  often.  In  the  dreams,  it  makes  a  sound.  On  some  nights,  the  sound  is  like  a  voice.  I  was  supposed  to  report  to  Zorran,  give  him  something  for  his  meeting,  but  I  remembered  too  late.  That  was  days  ago.

RE:  PLEASE  RESPOND

============================================================================

Mikal:

I’m  concerned,  as  I’ve  been  unable  to  communicate  with  Lt.  Kim’Vel,  my  operative  on  ISHTAR.  I  received  a  message  from  her  yesterday,  but  it  was  scrambled,  leading  me  to  believe  that  your  team  might  be  experiencing  some  sort  of  interference.  We’re  holding  off  on  the  search  and  rescue  for  the  moment.  Contact  me  any  way  you  can,  let  me  know  what’s  going  on  so  I  can  quiet  these  prying  Imperials.

Yours,

Wolfe

Personal  Log:  Kim’Vel,  Diora  Fizher  Wolak

Eirys  6

Con  came,  but  we  fought  over  it.  He  tried  to  touch  it.  I  screamed  at  him. I regret it now.

Eirys  8

He’s  still  sitting  in  the  corner,  with  that  stupid  look  on  his  face.

Eirys  10

I  wonder  how  he  knew  about  it.  The  sex  was  a  trick.  Maybe  he  told  others. I  barricaded  the  door.  It  is  safe  now.

Eirys  11

The  search  for  Orda  and  McGuire  left  days  ago.  They’re  not  coming  back.  I  know  this.  I  can’t  hear  anyone  out  in  the  halls  anymore.  They’re  all  gone  now.  It  promises  to  protect  me.  It  promises.

Excerpt,  Official  Report:  Eirys  16 GYS  1816
Search  and  Rescue,  HRS  Xatrix/ISHTAR  Project

[…]  Of  the  crewmembers  that  could  be  found,  all  were  dead,  apparently  of  major  contusions  and  lacerations  the  face,  head,  neck,  and  torso.

Lt.  Kim’Vel  was  found  in  her  suite,  which  had  been  erected  in  the  antechamber  at  Km  Marker  .10,  along  with  technician  Frytt;  both  were  deceased.  Frytt  had  suffered  a  severe  laceration  of  the  throat,  nearly  decapitating  him,  and  Lt.  Kim’Vel  was  dead  from  a  series  of  puncture  wounds  to  the  stomach,  evidently  self-‐inflicted  with  a  sonic  screwdriver  found  near  her  body.  At  this  time,  it  is  presumed  that  Kim’Vel  is  guilty  of  the  murder  of  Con  Frytt  and  likely  responsible  for  the  rest  of  the  Xatrix  casualties.

The  team  also  found  a  small, polished stone  in  a  handmade  pedestal  on  Kim’Vel’s  desk.  No  significance  was  attached  at  this  time.
